Some Pictures

Ok, so we’ve been really bad about taking pictures of the kids… I chalk it up to the fact that I want a new camera. So, if you want
more pics of the kids, feel free to donate THIS or THIS to the burns family.Grace

Today I did manage to go out and shoot a few pics in the yard. You can view them all HERE in my flickr album. I posted them there in case any of the grandparents wanted to order some.

Still Thinking.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my post the other day on John 1:43-35. I’ve mostly been thinking about my need to do the things I wrote about…

Along those lines I’d like to say that I enjoyed Pastor Doug’s sermon on Sunday regarding grace and God’s will. I think I might try to start a traditional Monday post where I share how Sunday’s sermon has impacted me… Hmmm… Maybe you’ll get one of those tonight. However, at current, Jenn is out getting some fresh air and my sweet baby Grace is squeeling too loud for me to concentrate on something requiring that much thought.

See ya tonight.

Welcome

I feel the need to introduce myself. I’m not going to, but I will say this:

I am enjoying the idea of our joint-blog
My husband is sweet & romantic
I am uncomfortable with the fact that there is no spell-check option here that I can find….

Mother’s Day

Here’s what I racked up on Mother’s Day 2007:

From the husband:

A clean house (no big chores today)
VA BBQ for lunch (no fixing lunch, minimal clean-up)
We didn’t eat dinner (no cooking or cleaning)

From the son:

Didn’t require any spankings all day (praise the Lord)
A rose (technically from the church, but he was so darn excited about it, it was awesome)
A mini herb garden, wrapped in paper decorated by him & ryan (sweet & practical, my favorite type of gift)
A prayer – after bedtime prayers he said, “one more”, when ryan asked what he said, “mama” (awwww…)

From the daughter:

Super sweet & quiet throughout church & while we waited for ryan to finish w/the breakdown crew (whew)
    Cried and/or squealed loudly from 5:30pm – 8pm (wait a minute…..that’s not a gift…)

My family is super duper. Thanks Burns’.

Happy Mom’s Day… Here’s Your Check

Ok, so apparently the typical stay-at-home mom’s work is worth $138,095 a year. If you are wondering how much your wife’s work is worth (besides “priceless”), then check out this salary calculator.

After running the number on Jennifer I found out that I’m going to need to borrow some money… anyone have an extra $114,252 I can borrow?

On a final note, if you use the salary calculator, at the end you can print out a fake check in the amount of her work’s value… Yeah, nothing says “thanks for the hard work” like a piece of paper with absolutely no monitary value what-so-ever.

Happy Mothers Day.

The Daily Burns is Live!

Well, it took a couple days, but The Daily Burns is live.

What is The Daily Burns you ask… Well, it is the marriage of two blogs; thetwocentcrockpot by Ryan Burns and Racooney Where Are You by Jennifer Burns. I got the idea after reading some of Erin’s posts on cultivatethesoul. I was thinking, “wow, that is cool… a husband and wife writing on the same blog.” So with that, and the fact that I was really getting tired of bloggers limitations, I talked with Jenn and we decided to go for it.

Now, here we are…

Last night Jennifer and I stayed up late importing all the posts from our seperate blogs, tagging them, and sprucing up the blog. It still has some bells and whistles we want to add, but for all intensive purposes we’re open for visitors. So, link away and tell your friends.

If you’d like to get us a blogwarming gift (like a housewarming gift… get it) the best gift is a comment. Let us know you’re here.

coffee…

First, starbucks… I don’t like starbucks. They over roast their beans and the coffee isn’t that great. Now, that is not to say that, in a pinch, I wouldn’t go to starbucks… but I’d rather not. Well, while my objection is mostly taste related, some of my Christian brothers and sisters have found another reason to avoid the chain. I find it interesting that, if you read the article, you’ll see that see that while Starbucks did run an “anti-god” cup, they also ran a “pro-god” cup by Rick Warren. Which, by the way, was quite a sermon to pack onto a starbucks cup.

Second, WORLD CUP IS CLOSED!!!! This is a travesty! Truly the best cup of joe in Richmond (or at least near the office) is gone. To be replaced by what? Some joint called “crossroads.” The note on the door says they will serve Rostovs coffee (did I mention that I can get Rostovs coffee from Rostoves – 4 blocks away) and Maggie Moo’s ice cream (15 blocks away) … Sheesh. Not to mention that they just painted the outside this hideous orange/yellow color. Oh, what to do? World Cup, why have you abandoned us?

I’m depressed… I think I’ll get some coffee.

three thoughts…

So, I was reading the Gospel according to John this afternoon and was struck by three things in John 1:43-45

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

First – Jesus made a decision.

If ever there was a lesson that Christians needed to learn, this is one of them… Make a decision. Time and time again I meet Christians who love Jesus, who pray, who seek to glorify God, and who just can’t make decisions. Now, I am not saying that one should flippantly make decisions, especially major life decisions, but at the end of the day you have to make the call. So, pray, submit you plans to God and to people you trusts, and for goodness sake make a decision.

Second – Jesus found Philip.

In some ways this relates to what I just mentioned. See, Jesus’ decision to go to Galilee was not arbitrary… instead, he was on a mission that involved finding a very specific person. And guess what, Jesus found him.

Third – Philip got it wrong.

We always do this… Jesus does something and we try to take credit for it. Clearly Jesus found Philip. However, moments after this encounter we see ‘ole Phil running to tell his friend Nate about what had just happened and he says, “We have found…” Sorry Phil, Jesus found you. That’s just the way it is.

So, the take-away… Make a decision, fulfill your mission, and stop taking credit for Jesus’ work.

Growing Up

I don’t really have time to put much thought into this post, but I’m sure if i don’t put something it will never to actually make it out of my head. I will be vague on the off-chance the person I talked to about this actually read this blog…which I seriously doubt. Anyhow, I recently overheard the following comment when this person was explaining why college students were walking around with balloon animals & face-paint:

they’ve finally figured us (college students) out. They’ve got a bouncy house, face paints, balloons, balloon animals…..we just want to have fun like little kids.

Ok, that might not be verbatim, but it’s pretty close. I myself would enjoy some time in a bouncy house & having my face painted….however, I’m not sure what that says about our society…or me…that not only would the school (or some company trying to sell something? i don’t know why they were on campus) would have the thought, “how about we set up something like a birthday party for a 5 year old? I bet the 18-25 year old students would love that” …& they did. I could go on about how our college experience (& i do mean OUR..as in how mine was) really fosters a lazy, “just hang out & have fun” attitude, but i will spare you. Mix all that together with the idea that you need to be at least 28 to be “mature” enough for marriage (another rabbit trail i will try to refrain from….that we have to be mature for marriage instead of marriage being an agent to mature us). But at the same time we all expect to somehow be millionaire’s or have some profound impact on society before we’re 30.

Not sure how that’s supposed to happen if we’re trying to relive our child-hood during the years we should be learning, training, & pressing through character-developing situations……
