Animal Sacrifices & Lots of brothers

I have a couple “Asher stories” that I have been sitting on for awhile:

1) The other night asher was looking out our living room window at some houses across the street with christmas lights. He asked some questions about them & i answered them. This brought us to the idea of celebrating Jesus’ birthday. “Jesus doesn’t have a birthday!”…I explained that yes, Jesus does have a birthday because he was born & lived on earth for awhile. Gave me a “processing, please wait” look. Then the following:

Asher: But Jesus is in heaven
Me: Yes, Jesus is in heaven
Asher: Momma, did Jesus die?
Me: Yes, he died on the cross, but then God made him come back to life & then he…um..well, floated up to Heaven, alive
Asher: Oh, yeah. And now, we don’t have to have animal sacrifices anymore!!
Me: um..well…yes…that is true

Indeed. I don’t think i grasped the connection on that one till I was in my mid-twenties. I knew he died for my sins, but the fact that His sacrifice was replacing the previous animal system…i didn’t get it for some reason. Not that I think he fully understands…but still..

2) One afternoon he was telling me about how one family we know has 3 kids and that we have 2 kids. I asked him if we should have more kids. He said yes. I asked how many. He said 5. “You want 5 more brothers & sisters??” his answer? “no, just brothers. I only need ONE sister.”

Long Hair & babywearing

On a much less “deep thought” level…..a couple random pics for you:

my hair is getting long. I like it, it’s fun. What I don’t like is that it takes 15min to make it look ‘pretty’ if i wear it down & it kinda bugs my neck so i find myself flipping it off my neck a lot….i can only imagine how silly i must look doing that:

And, I finally figured out how to ‘wrap’ grace on my hip. Here she is a few nights ago. I strapped her on & put asher on a chair & the two of them helped me make pizza. We had a blast (vs. the usual, “both kids crying in the doorway while i try to get dinner made”):

“Healed” by His Wounds

Yesterday I had one of those “dove descending upon me” moments. I could almost hear the choir of Angels as what I read sank in. Ok…maybe not quite that dramatic, but it honestly was a life-changing moment. I couldn’t wait to share it with you.

Yesterday I was on 1 Peter 2:11-25. It’s one of those inspiring passages about us following in Christ’s footsteps to suffer for the Gospel (I don’t mean that sarcastically). At the end I came across a very familiar verse. 1Peter 2:24 (second half):

By his wounds you have been healed

I have a confession to make. I’m fairly confident that I have NEVER read that verse in context! I’m sure I have READ it before, in that, “hurry, gotta get this chapter checked off that read the bible in a year plan” kind of way. However, it wasn’t until yesterday that the Holy Spirit illuminated it for me.

Ok, that being said, I was blown away that that verse wasn’t talking about physical, “i’m sick in my body” healing. I thought for sure that either

  1. I was misunderstanding it
  2. A similar phrase must be elsewhere in the bible, but talking about physical healing.

I searched & searched but only found Isaiah 53:4-9 which is also not talking about physical healing. Both these verses in context are talking about sin. He’s healed our hearts from sin. Yes, if you read the gospels, clearly Jesus is in the business of physical healing too. Yes, I pray for healing. I’m just saying….this verse was the only one where I could understand where people come up with the idea that as Christians we have an inalienable RIGHT to not get colds…or have cancer. That verse was pretty much my only stumbling block to the idea that God CAN heal people, but HE chooses when & if…not us & our fancy faith. So there you go. All this time the answer was right there. Funny what actually studying your Bible can do….

A good post

While waiting for a file to upload I check my google reader and saw a post on the Desiring God blog. This one was by Noel Piper (John Piper’s wife).

Personally, I find it really cool to hear or read what the wives of prolific writer/pastors have to say. Noel Piper doesn’t disappoint. In this post she recounts her recent near death experience on the side of a highway. She is a really great writer… and I’m glad she’s alive to recount her story.

ADDED LATER:

Ok, so after this post I decided to check the blog to see if Noel had any other posts… and she does. WOW! I didn’t read them all, but there were some amazing one… Well worth the read if you have the time.

Ok, back to work…

I’m a blogger

What can I say… I’m a blogger… I love the opportunity the internet provides for making money, expressing creativity, forming of community (debatable, Mr. Cowles would say), and sharing the gospel. It is a strange world, I’ll give you that… but one I enjoy throughly.

So, today I simply wanted to share a site that I found that (minus the making money thing) embodies all of the above. When I stumbled across Christ & Pop-culture I was amazed at the concept, the design, the implementation… truly a well done site. I did not have time (as I’m supposed to be working) to really dig around, but these guys are to be commended on putting something together that is really, really, well done.

I’ve actually been playing around with this very concept (magazine style blog with multiple writers) built around the concept of preaching and living the gospel at work… I was thinking something like thecubiclegospel.com or something like that… I don’t know if it will ever materialize, but these guys have done exactly what I would hope to do with it.

Way to go!

Another Site Launch

In our never ending attempt to create some residual income through the internet, I have launched my latest web project, www.photographerswebhosting.com. The site is designed to help photographers select a web host company for their photography website. The site is just as useful for non photography people looking for a web hosting solution, but adding the photo bit makes it a little more niche and helps with search engine optimization. Well, enough babbling… here it is for those who are interested in this sort of thing.

Online Shopping

First, thanks to everyone who has used out amazon link to do their holiday shopping.

I just wanted to take a moment to remind all The Daily Burns readers that if you are going to shop on Amazon.com, if you go to their site through ours then we get a commission on everything you buy. So, if anyone is in the market for a 52″ HDTV and plans on buying it through amazon… PLEASE start here. And, if you’re buying smaller stuff, like books, that’s cool too.

Also, you can spread the word to your friends and spread the giving spirit by telling them how they can help your friends pay their bills by simply clicking a link before they shop :)

Seriously, thank to everyone who remembers to use our site for their amazon exploits. It really does help.

Reminder on Motivation

This morning I just had a really refreshing reminder that I felt compelled to share w/ya’ll. It’s not some shiny new discovery, just a plain old, “heard this a zillion times” type thing that easily gets pushed to the back of the pile.

I was reading 1peter 1:13-2:3. The section before it talks about our salvation & how we get to live out what people before the time of Christ only dreamed (& prophesied) about…& even Angels are envious of! So this section starts with “therefore”….& goes on to talk about Holy living. I was struck by the reminder of our motivation for holy living. We’re not striving to earn salvation or approval or love, but BECAUSE of our salvation & approval & love…for what we have already recieved, we cling to the Word of God & “prepare our minds for action”.

We have been “ransomed from our futile ways” at a very high price…thus we desire to live to the standard of our rescuer…not out of obligation but joy & thanksgiving.

ahh….that is just so amazing.
