Happy Reformation Day

Apparently today is “reformation day“.  I have somehow never heard of this till last night.  Did some quick googling this morning to find a short story about it for the kids today & found lots of cool stuff (that takes advance preparation).  So mental note:  Next year we’re totally having a “Reformation Day Party”.  ;)

So today, we read a story, mostly about Martin Luther, then drew some pictures about it & answered some questions related to the story (never ceases to amaze me the fact that they actually listen to stories & can answer questions about them).

Grace started drawing “people” today for the first time! (circles w/dots inside):

Asher has insisted i put his picture “on the internet” (i have a hard time figuring out sizing & am not going to spend anymore time on this).  The large pink “guy” is Luther, with a hammer in hand.  Bottom left guy in chair is reading a bible to his kids (focused in the story was how the reformation brought literacy in general & esp. biblical literacy for “common folk”).

Oh & just for fun, a couple pics from yesterday, they dressed up for storytime at the library.  I’m sure there will be some more costume pics after tonight’s festivities….i’m getting a little out of control w/this new found picture posting ability.  ;)    Asher is a “Good Roman Soldier”, Grace ended up being a unicorn vs. kitty cat b/c I found this coat super cheap at a thrift store & she’s all about unicorn’s lately.  Big sigh of relief, this will be much warmer than what would’ve been a kitty cat!

On the bus:

Garlic-ked

Here he is the

We discovered this week that Goldfish crackers do have garlic.  I have suspected as much and thus, make sure to tell childcare workers at church & the like not to give them to him, but in all honesty I was just assuming that included in “spices” was garlic.  I tried finding out if Ketchup includes garlic in their “spices”, but since it’s not a “top 8 allergen”, they won’t release the information without a signed doctor’s note saying I need it.  …embarrasingly..I’ve been too lazy to call & get the note (bag over head).  But we have limited his ketchup consumption dramatically & i always give him enzymes with meals that contain it.  I assume the cracker company would be as difficult.

Anyhow, back to the fish.  On monday at playgroup one of the mom’s brought goldfish & I completely  forgot they were a potential issue.  Asher probably ate MOST of them himself.  He sat in front of that bowl for a looong time & even carried one around with him.  Then halfway through the group, i remembered & told him not to eat anymore…this was of course not met pleasantly and he kept saying, “but my tummy doesn’t hurt!”.  So I told him it would be an experiment to see if momma was right or not, but that it likely wouldn’t show anything till the next day.

Sure enough tuesday morning he woke up considerably early complaining of a stomach ache & spent the next 20 min. quite unhappy on the toilet with lots of subsequent trips that morning…he’s better but still not 100% in that area yet.  So yeah…mental note:  no goldfish crackers.  And thankfully Asher seems to have learned from it & has asked me not to let him eat them anymore.  Smart kid.

Wiping Tears

This morning I needed to make a short grocery list.  I reached into the recycling bin (well…bag) and pulled out Asher’s tracer sheet from yesterday.  He is on a major drawing kick and wants to throw nothing away, so when he’s not looking I have to carefully put his papers in the recycling bin, under other stuff. I feel kinda bad, but we can’t keep that many sheets around!   Anyhow, the piece i tore off still had a bit of “evidence” and Asher saw it.  he knew exactly which paper it was and was totally heartbroken.  No tears yet, but I could tell he was sad, so I explained a bit, apologized and then moved on.  Turned around & he was quiet but had tears streaming down his cheeks.

This of course caused me to cry & we sat in a wet heap on the kitchen floor for a few minutes.  I again explained that we just couldn’t keep ALL of his drawings, but I would start a folder for ones he deemed “extra special”.  He sighed & grabbed my hair & proceeded to wipe off his tears with it.

I was struck by the image of Luke 7:38 when the sinful woman washed Jesus’ feet with her tears.  So then we got to have a fun little talk about that story (it is in his bible book).

Grace was still eating her breakfast at the table & seemed not to have noticed the entire exchange.  …btw, she still loves the boots.

Making Things Official

Since I (FINALLY) learned how to upload pictures to the blog the other day, I decided to purpose to take & add more pictures. We’ll see how that goes….best laid plans and all.

So for my picture debut (unfortunately my pics will not be the artistic quality that you are by now used to from Ryan): Rain boots. From what i’ve gathered, they are to Washingtonians as flip flops are to Floridians. I kept meaning to get rain boots while in florida (but never found any small enough), but since the storms were usually short lived & the weather hot, the ground wasn’t actually wet all that often…and since it was hot, flip flops worked just as well as boots would. Here however it’s just kind of damp a lot…and when it does rain, it lingers awhile and isn’t violent enough to keep people out of it. In fact I’ve noticed people seem downright unaffected when it starts to rain…out walking dogs & to the bus stop…sans umbrellas. There has been a decided lack of umbrellas altogether from what I can tell. Guess it’s hard to get stuff done trying to tote those around. So rain boots & jackets it is. Next we’ll have to shop for some raincoats…

Both children 100% picked out their own boots with no input from me. I prepared my ego for the reality that I would probably have to buy spiderman boots. However, Asher with no hesitation chose these rather hip-looking pair (I promise until he was 100% satisfied w/his choice i maintained a neutral expression & said nothing).

Couldn't get a good view of the kicks on full-body shot

Grace not so much but I’ve come to expect nothing less and I love her choice too. They are cool in a different way. :) It was a fun experiment in personality. She calls them her, “witty tat doots”

She was hamming it up big time here. turned out cute though

Me? Well…I’m my daughter’s mother. I couldn’t decide between lady bugs & flowers. Grace made the final decision for me. Admittedly I saw a woman wearing these at the Farm last weekend & really liked them.

Flower Girl

Now i feel like a local. ;)

For toddler art lovers: Jericho; an interpretation

Lately while Grace is napping and either before or after Asher’s “roomtime”, I sit down with him & work on a letter tracing page. We do one letter a day. Some letters/days he does great & works hard to get it right. Others he’s just silly & still others are really difficult & he tries but I don’t push too hard to correct mistakes. At this point my main goal is working on fine motor skills, not so much actually being able to write letters.

After he finishes the page he then turns it over to draw on his own. He always draws people & for the past week & a half he’s been stuck on drawing “jericho”. Last week we got a book about firefighters and one about pirates who got tied up in rope. They have both been incorporated. Thx to ryan’s help via messenger (thx ryan, sorry to distract work), you will see below: Jericho. The ‘bad guys’ are the small ones on the bottom right lined up along the “wall” (the line with zig zag going down it), the ‘Israelites’ are also firefighters & for some reason the red one is tied up. (the domes on the black guys’ heads are firefighter helmets). You will also note, the balls on the ends of the “good guys” hands are: boxing gloves.

Visit to the Pumpkin Patch

Went to a farm to get a pumpkin.  We went on a hay ride, ventured through a muddy corn maze, picked a few apples, and had a really good time… oh, keep an eye out for the sky goats.

Oh, and here is a picture of a slug eating mushrooms.  We saw this on our nature hike last week.

Some Seattle Pictures

Ok, we’re pretty much settled in up here in Bellingham so I wanted to take a moment to share with you some pictures from our trip to Seattle (plus a few from Bellingham).  Ready?  Here we go:

Here is the view from our hotel in Seattle.  Of course, this was with my zoom lens, so we weren’t that close to the water… but look way back and you can see Mt. Rainer.

Here was the news chopper that was parked right outside out window.

Here we are waiting for the monorail to take us downtown.  Our hotel was about 5 blocks from the Space Needle and we walked everywhere to get around.

When I was looking at these pictures I was reminded that my wife is stunningly beautiful.  I also wanted to prove that I was on the trip so I snapped a self portrait.

Here is Asher deciding that, despite his earlier decision to sit by himself, the moving floor that connects the two cars of the train does not look all that safe.  This was quickly followed with an “I want to sit with you and momma.”

Among our many adventures was a trip to the children’s museum.  We had lots of fun that included a lot of playing and running from one exhibit to the next.

The last day in Seattle we went to the science center.  Outside they had an exhibit that was trying to teach us something about weights, balance, and center of gravity… all I saw was a cool bike you got to ride 30 feet in the air.  I thought it would be cool to go with no hands… Jenn thought it would be cool to go with no eyes.

In the science center we got to go see a bunch of butterflies.  I’ve got to admit, that was way cooler than I thought it would be.

You can’t go to Seattle without going to Pikes Place.  Much like the butterfly garden, this was much cooler than I expected.  The sights, sounds, and people were really amazing.

While at the market we decided to grab lunch.  Apparently it was some restaurant where Tom Hanks ate at in a scene from Sleepless in Seattle.  It wasn’t all that great, but we needed food as the kids were getting restless and hungry.  While there the fog began to break and we could see the cranes at the ship yard.

After a great time in Seattle it was time to head home… to Bellingham.  The first two days, while waiting for our moving truck to arrive, we explored our surroundings and went on some nature walks.

We also went over to the harbor where I saw a sign I just couldn’t resist taking a picture of… feel free to make up your own joke here.

Here are two pictures of Grace that I just had to share… I’ve got an feeling we may have an actress on our hands.  Watch out Hollywood.

So, there you have it…

With love from Bellingham, WA.

Grace Turns 2

Sorry for taking so long to post these… better late than never.  Here are pics from Grace’s 2nd birthday (August 30th).

Grace was all excited about her birthday.  Here she gets her b-day cupcake.  She blew out one candle and then began to cry.  It was more of a freaked out cry than a sad cry.  I think something about the flame scared her… So, mom and dad blew out the second candle.

Of course, eating the cupcake brought much joy and delight to our beautiful little girl.

Dad, on the other hand is a big fan of the fork method of cupcake eating.  I know, I know… I’m not fun at all.

Despite the messy mouth, I’m always up for giving my little girl a birthday kiss.

So, there we are… party time Burns style.

After the cupcake we adjourned to the living room for gifts.

The funniest thing was that she got a little doll that she named “girl.”  She was very adamant that the doll’s name was Girl.

From Mom, Dad, and Asher – Grace received a piggy bank.  Hers is far more deluxe than Asher’s.  When Asher turned 2 we got him a yellow, plastic, piggy bank from the dollar store.  For Grace, Jenn took Asher to Target to pick out one for Grace.  He said, “Grace likes princesses so we should get her that one.”  So, the princess piggy back it was.  What was even sweeter was that Asher was so excited that he ran to get his piggy bank, opened it up, dumped out all his change and began to share his money with Grace so she could have money in her bank as well.

So, there you have it.  Two years down and many more to go!

Lightening Hunter | Episode VI | Victory!

Shortly after the kids went to bed I sat down at the computer and heard the distant rumble of thunder.  After a couple consecutive far off booms I checked the radar.  Sure enough a storm was coming in from the north west.  I grabbed my camera, kissed my wife, and ran out the door.

Arriving at my normal lightening grounds I quickly set up shop… meaning, I took off me lens cap (seriously, someone buy me a tripod).  Anyway, I set the camera to shutter priority and opened it for 5 seconds.  I would soon learn that  shooting lightening in shutter priority is not the way to go.  After about 10 minutes I managed to catch a SPECTACULAR strike.  Sadly, this is where I learned my shutter priority mistake.  Apparently, the camera had decided to leave the aperture open too wide and thus I have nothing but a bright flash.  Here is the result:

Learning from my mistake I quickly dropped the aperture to 15 and kept the shutter at 5 seconds.  I kept on shooting.  As I was shooting I began to really take in the beauty of this storm.  None of my pictures (all 200+ of them) could capture the beauty of the night.  The clouds were almost pitch black, however there was this bright amber glow on them from ambient light.  Then there were lots of holes in the storm and you could see the perfectly clear sky above.  It was a deep, deep royal blue with glittering stars sprinkled about.  The most amazing thing was in these cloud breaks you could see the reflection of the moon light bouncing off the tops of the clouds… it was truly a beautiful, beautiful site.

While taking this all in I managed to squeeze a couple “almost” shots off.  Here are three.  It is like a game… “Who can you spot the lightening?”

Finally, after much painful kneeling in pine bark, resting my camera and arms on a concrete railing, I got it… my first official lightening shot.  It isn’t perfect, but after MANY attempts, it feels really good to finally snag one.

Thank-you, and goodnight!

Orlando Photographers

So, my newest online venture is a site called Photographers in Orlando. The site is designed to be a destination for those searching for a photographer in the Orlando area. As of right now, I only have one photographer listed on the site as she attends our church and is one of the only photographers I actually know in Orlando.

I am currently offering free postings for photographers, but I hope that once the site grows I will be able to charge a monthly fee to be listed… but that is probably a ways off yet. Till then I hope to generate some revenue through the google ads on the site.

So, we’ll see if it work… not many of my previous ideas have, but I keep thinking that some day one of these has to come through… Till then I will plod onward. So, if you know any photographers in Orlando Fl or a looking for one, let me know.
