Sunday morning and I actually managed to get up early for some prayer and scripture reading. Started reading Romans for no real reason at all. Got to Chapter 5 and was reminded of something that I, and I’d say lots of people, overlook. Namely:
“For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” Romans 5:10 (emphasis mine)
Outside of the reconciliation through Jesus, we all are God’s enemy… That’s what it says.
Have you ever thought about it that way?
My good friend Robert used to say it this way, “Most people feel like they are in trouble with God… in the ‘dog-house’ so to speak… the truth is you’re not in the dog-house, you’re in the morgue!” The scripture for that one is Ephesians 2:1.
It is a tough and humbling pill to swallow that says I’m dead and the enemy of God. However, that is the very humbling we need in order to understand the greatness of God’s gift of reconciliation. When one realizes that he or she is not just out of God’s cosmic “time out” but rather has been give life from death and forgiveness as an enemy… all at the expense of Jesus on a cross… THAT can really change your life.!
“Oh the depths of the riches of the knowledge of God!” – Romans 11:33a
